Personal Pronouns are not as difficult as you might think. Learning how to do personal pronouns correctly is simple if you follow these rules.

Definition

Nouns are names for things (IE: cat, dog, car). Proper nouns are peoples’ names (IE: Walter, Dianna, Julia). We need to use nouns to share what we’re talking about. However, if we use nouns all the time it sounds awkward. Therefore, English speakers replace nouns with pronouns.

Pronouns are used in place of someones’ names. We use different pronouns depending on whether it is singular or plural, and the gender (male, female, neither, both, or gender-less).

Examples

Dianna (female, singular) has a big computer. She has a big computer.

Walter (male, singular) has a bigger computer. He has a bigger computer.

The fence (gender-less, object) is tall. It is tall.

You (gender-less, singular and plural) have the biggest computer.

Dianna and Walter have a lovely home. They (gender-less, more than one person) have a lovely home.

We (gender-less, more than one including self) have many happy days.

AndPersonal pronouns are categorized as

  • First Person (I, we)
  • Second Person (you, they)
  • Third Person (he, she, it)

First person is when we talk about ourselves, or ourselves with other people.

Second person is when you talk to other people.

Third person is when you talk about other people.
