Today I will teach you about Irregular verbs. Irregular verbs can be difficult if you don’t understand them. Use the practice worksheet to help you improve your use of irregular verbs in the past and present tense.

What are verbs? Verbs are things you do.

But verbs change! They are always changing. It usually changes based on when you do something. Do you always like doing something? Are you doing something right now? Did you do something yesterday? Did you finish doing it?

The base form of some verbs are: play, arrive, call, wait, like, hate.

The past tense verbs (for things you did yesterday, last week, an hour ago, etc.) are: played, arrived, called, waited, liked, hated.

As you can see, you add an -ed to your verbs to show past tense.

But, some verbs do not follow this rule. These verbs are called IRREGULAR VERBS. Irregular verbs can be divided into two groups:

SAME or VERY DIFFERENT

IRREGULAR VERBS THAT ARE THE SAME

These are the verbs that do not change. The base and past tense are the same.

For example: cost, hurt, let, cut

The base form and the past tense are the same.

IRREGULAR VERBS THAT ARE VERY DIFFERENT

These irregular verbs do not follow the rule of adding -ed, and they do not stay the same.

Some examples of irregular verbs:

BASE: run, do, go, buy, keep, make, say

PAST TENSE: ran, did, went, bought, kept, made, said

As you can see, these irregular verbs do not have any rules.
