Today we will learn all about English interrogatives and how to use them. It will be a quick lesson because they are actually really simple. Let’s jump into it and learn some new English grammar skills.

Definition

Who? What? Where? When? Why? How? You’ve probably heard these words before. But, before we go on, what do they mean?

WHO: referring to a person.

WHAT: referring to an object, or an action

WHERE: referring to a place

WHEN: referring to a time

WHY: referring to a reason to do something

HOW: referring to the method of doing something

We can use these words as interrogatives.

Interrogatives ask questions using who, what, where, when, why and how. The modal, can, may also ask a question. They can require an extensive answer of just a yes or a no. Interrogatives (who, what, where, when, why, and how) are usually first in the sentence.
