In today’s daily English diary I wanted to talk about something that many students struggle with.

Student looks worried by a surprise quiz in class.

Tests. English tests. Math tests. All tests really. Tests do one really bad thing in my mind. They discourage learning.

Every time a test is coming, students of all ages race to try and remember as much as they can for the test. They study so hard and so much that the material they are trying to memorize can’t stay in their mind. The second thing that happens is that if they do not perform well on a test they get discouraged. They studied so hard but they didn’t do well on the test.

Many students develop self doubt from tests. They think that they are not smart enough to pass the test like their classmates. This can turn to a negative attitude in studying.

I have never been a fan of tests. I have made lots of them but mostly just to help students remember more. If you notice from my lessons, I encourage mistakes. I don’t stick to rigid rules and teach boring things. Learning is all about enjoyment and a sense of accomplishment. If we add moments of stress and point out every mistake, the fun is gone. Learning stops.

How about you. What do you think about tests?

  1. I have never like tests. I was always a good student, I learned all lesson honestly, my exams were very good. But if I had to complete a test, I was always uncertain. So I agree with you the moments of stress can turn to a negative attitude in studying. Children, but adult students to sit down with excitement to fill their tests. By the way, fill the tests does not allow us to speak English.

  2. It is hard sometimes to see what kids and adults have to go through with tests.
