English Conjunctions Grammar Lesson
In this lesson I will teach you all about English Conjunctions and how to use them. I will give you a conjunctions table to help you remember them really quick.
Some thoughts are very easy. We say what we want to say, and then we’re done. I like cake. We will sink in the river. It’s sunny.
What if we have more complicated thoughts? We might need to use a conjunction to share these thoughts. Conjunctions join words, phrases and sentences.
“There are three kinds of conjunctions; coordinating, subordinating and conjunctive adverbs.”
What are the different conjunctions? There is an acronym to remember the different types of conjunctions:
F A N B O Y S: This represents the coordinating conjunctions which connect equally important ideas. There are the most popular conjunctions.
Conjunction | When to Use It | Example |
F is for for | signals the reason for something. | I went for the free food and drinks. |
A is for and | Joins similar ideas | I like both cake and ice cream. |
N is for nor | Joins negative ideas | I don’t like snakes nor spiders. |
B is for but | Joins opposite ideas. | I could drive a car but I don’t have a car. |
O is for or | Joins choices | We will either sink or swim. |
Y is for yet | Refers to a time that starts in the past and continues to the present | She has not taken the garbage outside yet. |
S is for so | Signals the outcome | It was sunny so I went to the park. |
And…
WABBITS: The other popular type of conjunction are subordinating conjunctions which join two phrases of equal or unequal importance, that is , independent and independent clauses. They include /when, while, after, although, before, because, if , though, since/…. BUT that’s a big lesson for another day.
